Winner of the 2022 'Design Matters' awards for 'Excellence in Use of Timber' and 'Best Rural Design', this contemporary rural residence draws on the restrained simplicity of New Zealand architectural forms, thoughtfully adapted to suit the Australian landscape and lifestyle. Inspired by the enduring gabled silhouettes common in rural New Zealand, the home is conceived as a secluded family retreat, offering a sense of calm, privacy and connection to its natural surroundings.

The design is carefully positioned to embrace expansive southern views over Doctors Point while maintaining a deliberate visual and spatial relationship to the north. At the centre of the composition, an infinity edge pool acts as an organising element, visually and physically linking the built form with the surrounding environment. Environmental performance underpins the design approach, incorporating passive solar planning, effective cross ventilation and the use of thermal mass to support comfort throughout the seasons. Living areas are strategically oriented to capture optimal northern sunlight, while also framing sweeping rural outlooks that define the home’s character.
